Bruce O’Neil was a basketball visionary and left a lasting impact on the international basketball community. A native of Tacoma, Washington, he played college basketball at the University of Hawaii in the 1960s and later became a top assistant coach and the head coach. In 1992, he served as the president of the United States Basketball Academy (USBA), which provided opportunities for players, coaches, and administrators to train and learn from top coaches in the United States. Over the years, O’Neil made over 130 trips to China to help grow the game of basketball and was considered one of the foremost experts on basketball in China. He is remembered for his lifelong connections with multi-generations of players, coaches, and his knowledge of the game. The USBA became a destination for teams from all over the world to train and learn. At the USBA campus, the cabins are named after famous coaches who helped bring the USBA into existence. O’Neil’s legacy lives on through the many international students, coaches, and players he touched. His unique and longevity on the global basketball community will not be forgotten.
